The Face We Make

Emoticons are now as innocuous as they are ubiquitous, and the fear of miscommunication has been replaced by the grim prospect of having nothing to communicate, trading placeholders of emotion while feeling nothing. Dexter Miranda’s mapping project, The Face We Make, reconnects the emoticon to its source: facial expressions that convey emotion. Miranda asked strangers on the streets of New York to perform the emotions suggested by ten common emoticons. The results are published into limited edition art books, and the ongoing mapping project is documented on thefacewemake.org.
